I will be painting my car over the winter. Recommend me a good beater car. A nice subaru legacy would be the dopeness but alas those arent cheap and I might fall in love and want to keep it.

Kinja'd!!!

Priorities are

1. cheap

2. boring

3. reliable

I would like to re sell the thing when the paint dries but i dont really care what it is or looks like or anything.

my instincts say high mileage camry civi cavalier or sentra or an ex cop crown vic.

What are your experiences with cheap winter beaters?

Any GM four-banger with a rear track-bar is going to over-steer like crazy if the ass breaks traction in bad weather. You might as well kiss awd goodbye if you want affordable. You may be able to find a beater Dakota or S10 for cheap... but it won't get you to work in the same manner. Any beater Impreza that you can afford in October, their current owner probably knows that they won't make it through January...

You just need a decent fwd car that has the engine resting its weight over the front axles. I'd buy a 1gn neon because I'm a trained Dodge sadist. You probably want something else. I've only owned 3rd gen Golf's with V6s', but they tugged their way out of snow-drifts fairly well.

K-cars do not.

If you asked earlier, I could've sold my Escape to ya.

But yeah, in all seriousness, a Cavalier, Civic, or Corolla does the job. I'd suggest a Mazda 3, but those rot up like nothing else, if you live in salt country. Cheap Jettas + Golfs without electrical issues also work. They're pretty damn reliable from the experience I've had.

I have a Cutlass Ciera as my winter beater. Pretty terrible, but damn it never breaks.

I would probably spend my money on any late 90's early 00's GM car with a 3.8.

'90s Corolla with a 5-speed. Wagon for bonus points.

Use leftover money for winter tires. Fall in love.

Swap in 4AGE. Wonder why you bothered buying a beater when you end up falling in love with it.

The deer broke the windshield with its face. Since deer don't keep anything inside of their heads it was just fine.

J body fan boy here.

I will say this about a Cavalier.

They will run badly longer than most things will run at all.

ALSO....even good conditioned ones are very cheap these days, $3k for a nice one, $500 for a running rusty one.

Check to make sure the rust isn't too terminal, and you'll be set.

Hyundai Elantra.

A lot cheaper than a Corolla/Civic and just as well made. The resale values on Hyundais are still pretty low so you should be able to pick up a cheap one easy. I'd say go for a manual one if you can find it, I know sometimes they have auto transmission issues (then again, who doesn't).
